Twenty four years ago, American Airlines Flight 77 crashed into the Pentagon’s northwest side at 9:37 a.m. One of your hares was sitting at his desk about 69 yards from the impact site; he is fortunate to have survived. Two of his office mates did not. Your hares are both celebrating birthdays around this date; do not ask about our combined ages. Your trail will take you into Arlington’s heights, from and through which you will get to see some local landmarks. Please be respectful of the Memorials you will pass, especially that which marks the 184 people who lost their lives at the Pentagon that morning. Likewise, please be mindful of the 400+ k folks interred at nearby Arlington National Cemetery. Be careful, in general.

Fun facts:
- The Pentagon, built from sand dredged up from the Potomac River, was intended to serve as a hospital.
- The Air Force Memorial is “aimed” at the site of the impact of AA #77. Its location is precisely on the flight path.
- Arlington National Cemetery is in a long term expansion construction project on its southern flank. You will see ample evidence of that.
