How to: Enter Ecuador with at least 6 months Validity on your Passport from a country that allows entrance into Ecuador Yellow Fever Vaccine must be in Vax booklet!!
You can fly from Madrid directly to Quito or Panama City to Guayaquil, or Bogota to Guayaquil/Quito, or Houston to Quito, and I'm sure you can find other direct or indirect modes.
Fly from Quito or Guayaquil direct to Cuenca...different timings for this, so check your bookings.
2a. Buses leaving from Terminal Terreste Guayaquil to Cuenca ($8) or van taxi across from the airport ($12) are available. Walking to these modes of travel at night is not advisable in Guayaquil
Pronto\Now it is a busy time in Cuenca during Carnaval, so please book your accommodation now
Accommodations will be at your own expense, and we suggest locating close to Parque Calderon, which is the centre of Old Town, or maybe you just need a bed at Santa Canela Hostel, our Hash Venue.
Ecuador's weather in the Cuenca Andes region, Nov-May, is the rainy season with sun (high UV at 8000 ft) in the morning and usually clouding over in the early afternoon for a moderate rain mid-afternoon. Older Cuencanos walk in the shaded part of the street to avoid skin cancer. Walk like an Egyptian to bewilder the locals with much rejoicing, like a Hasher!! Temperatures are usually 25 °C during the day and 12 °C at night. Sunrise and sunset are at approximately 0530 and 1830 hours. You will need wet weather gear, sunscreen and maybe warm gear for night.
Poisonous animals and insects are rare in the Andes, which means no mosquitoes or black flies and no poisonous snakes, frogs or spiders. We do have big tarantulas and small alpacas, but they aren't poisonous.
Travelling in Ecuador is a life-changing experience, as it is the size of Newfoundland or Colorado and encompasses the Amazon, the Andes Mountains, which claim the highest mountain, Mt. Chimborazo, measured from the center of the Earth, the Coastal Region and the Galapagos Islands. Ecuador has 17 million inhabitants. Cuenca, the Athens of the Andes, has many adventures to participate in, including Ingapirca, Turi/Cuenca Bus tour, Amaru, a hiking zoo, Cava San Miguel Rum tour, Panama Hat tour, to name a few.
Ecuador's currency is USD, but they mix in their coins with the U.S. coinage. Please do not bring bills higher than $20, they believe $50 and above are 'fake'! The cabs love change, and to travel in and around Cuenca, it will cost you between $2.00 - $5.00.
Be aware of these locations, especially at night
The airport, the bordello, and the river walk areasalways travel in groups
During Carnaval, pickpockets come to our fair Andes paradise and spray you in the face with foam before going through your pockets...bury your treasure, thus making it harder to find your junk!
